Where: Adelaide Convention Centre and online

Around 600 experts will convene in Adelaide for the 14th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion to showcase their research into safety and injury prevention practice across many aspects of society.

Injury is the leading cause of death for people aged 1 to 44 in Australia, and claims more than 13,000 lives every year, Conference Convenor Professor Richard Franklin said.

“More than 527,000 people are hospitalised in Australia annually because of injuries, which according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare results in about 8.4 percent of the burden of disease across the continent, and costs our health services almost $9 billion annually.

“This global conference is a chance to share evidence-based research into how to reduce injuries and make our societies safer, both here and around the world.

We’ll cover topics including children, safer environments for sport and recreation, drowning, autonomous vehicles, road safety, interpersonal violence, and falls among older people.

“There’s also a special session on Monday about First Nations’ injury prevention, with presenters sharing their studies involving Australian, New Zealand, Pasifika, and Canadian communities,” the James Cook University-based researcher added.

The conference is hosted by the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), Australasian Injury Prevention Network, and Australasian University Safety Association, and supported by the World Health Organization.

The conference welcome and opening plenary begins 8:30am ACDT Monday. Most presentations will be recorded and will be accessible for three months. Media passes are available for in-person or online participation.
