The Public Health Internship Program
has closed for 2024

Two of Australia’s leading public health organisations – PHAA and CCA – are partnering to jointly offer opportunities for internships during 2024.

The aim of the internships is to provide practical skills and knowledge in the area of public health policy and advocacy.

The primary eligibility criterion is that applicants are enrolled in an Australian university as an undergraduate or postgraduate student in a public health (or related) field, or have recently graduated (within the last 12 months) from such study.

For 2024 the two organisations are inviting applications though a common process, but each organisation will interview and make offers of places separately. Applicants will be invited to indicate which organisations they are willing to be placed with. This joint approach will allow interns access to a broader range of possible experiences, and allow each potential intern to be better matched on the basis of their interests and goals.

Each organisation will run its internships according to its own practice. These internships are intended to have around 180 hours of engagement, based on one of two models:

Model A: 6-week internship, at approx 30 hours per week
Model B: 12-week internship, at approx 15 hours per week

PHAA is offering five internships, 3 in the 6-week format and 2 in the 12-week format, for the following planned dates:
Slot A1: (6 weeks, 30 hrs/wk) 5 Feb – 15 March 2024
Slot A2: (6 weeks, 30 hrs/wk) 13 May – 21 June 2024
Slot A3: (6 weeks, 30 hrs/wk)     28 Oct – 6 Dec 2024
Slot B1: (12 weeks, 15 hrs/wk) 19 Feb – 10 May 2024
Slot B2: (12 weeks, 15 hrs/wk) 5 Aug – 25 Oct 2024

Cancer Council aims to offer up to six 12-week (15 hr/wk) internships. Applicants interested in CCA internships will be requested to indicate whether the first half or second half of the 2024 year (or both) are suitable.

Internships can be primarily virtual, but opportunities for physical connection with organisation offices do offer improved experience.

PHAA will make a financial grant to its interns for 2024. CCA will not offer a general grant, but has budget to meet some practical expenses for interns.

PHAA has a preference for intern appointments to be PHAA members, but all people meeting the eligibility criteria are invited to apply, and all will be considered on merit.
