Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award

The nomination process for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Public Health Award is open until 5pm, 31 July 2023.

Background

The Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), in 2019, initiated the first Public Health Medal for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who have made a significant contribution to the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people via a public health approach. This Award is designed to be the Associations pre-eminent prize in Indigenous health. The Award is open for nomination every year.

The PHAA bestows this competitive award on a person who has provided a notable contribution to the promotion of public health to benefit Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, solving public health problems, advancing community awareness of public health measures and advancing the ideals and practice of equity in the provision of Indigenous health care.

Criteria for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Award:

Nominees will have actively engaged in one or more of the following in Australia designed to:

  • Promote public health of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander people within Australia;
  • Promote multi-disciplinary approaches to designing public health solutions and solving Indigenous public health problems;
  • Advance community awareness of public health measures and outcomes and the real cost of inadequate public health responses for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; and
  • Advance the ideals and practice of equity in the provision of Indigenous health care (equity defined as equal care for equal need).

To be eligible the nominee must:

  • Be an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
  • Have a proven track record in the advancement of Indigenous public health in Australia;
  • Be an Australian citizen or resident; and
  • Have undertaken his/her activities in Australia.

Information to be included in the nomination includes:

  • Background of the person e.g. education, experience, community standing
  • Details of the work they have undertaken at a community, policy and/or research level, including impact of the work community, policy and/or research level
  • Anything else the nominations believe makes the nominee outstanding

The award recipient for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Public Health Award will be announced and presented at the Australian Public Health Conference held at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart, from Tuesday 26 to Thursday 28 September 2023.

Adjudication

The Vice President Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, along with other PHAA Board/Committee members will form or appoint the subcommittee to adjudicate the award. The Sub Committee will have the right to not appoint the award in any given year if in their view a nominee of suitable standard is not nominated.

Offer extended to Recipient

  • Return economy airfare from their nearest airport to the Annual Conference.
  • A single night’s accommodation on the day of or the day before the award granting event (two if from a remote community).
  • Registration to the Annual Conference
  • Total value of above to not exceed $2,000 (unless from a remote area)
  • A short acceptance speech of 5 minutes is invited. A full oration or plenary presentation is not required
