The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion SIG was formed to address diversity-related public health matters in Australia and internationally by pooling the diversity-related expertise among PHAA members, particularly (but not limited to) those which thus far have not been specifically accommodated in existing SIGs, such as: sexuality and gender diversity; men’s health; ageing and aged care; disability; and religion and spirituality.

Joanne Flavel is a Research Fellow at Stretton Health Equity at the University of Adelaide. She was awarded her PhD in 2016 from Flinders University.
Her research focuses on social determinants of health and health equity, and she is passionate about social justice.
She is a scholar in social epidemiology and public health but her quantitative skills and social science background are interdisciplinary. Her main current research project is focused on restoring the fair go.
She is a Global Burden of Disease collaborator and a member of the international Punching Above Weight (PAW) Network, formed to advance thinking and research about why some countries do much better in terms of health outcomes than would be predicted by their economic status. She has been a member of DEI SIG since late 2019.

Associate Professor Hannah is a senior academic and a senior researcher at the Centre for Healthy Sustainable Development at Torrens University Australia. Her research focuses on non-communicable disease prevention; health behaviour; health service; digital health, inequities, and accessibility among diverse populations, specifically migrants, refugees and disadvantaged population. Her dedicated contributions in diversity, equity and inclusion and has been recognised at the national by the 2024 Champion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Award (PHAA).
