Public Health Education Research Trust (PHERT)

Purpose

In 1991 the Public Health Association of Australia put in place a trust, known as the Public Health Education and Research Trust (PHERT). The purpose of the trust is to advance medical and scientific research, with funds being applied to the recognition and engagement of the contribution made by people working in the field of public health, including:

the promotion of public and professional education and promoting excellence in public health practice;
the encouragement and support of research into issues of public health;
facilitating and encouraging the dissemination of information and ideas germane to public health by way of, among other things, orations, papers and various media;
the provision of workshops and financial support to attend workshop meetings and courses whether or not conducted by the Trust; and,
providing educational material for the public on matters of public health importance.

Trustees

Mr Peter Trebilco (chair);
Assoc. Prof. Jeanne Daly;
Professor Peter Howat;
Dr Jane Freemantle;
Ms Chris Morris

Funding

The Trust was set up with the generous donation of book royalties from Drs Jane Hall, Penny Hawe and D. Degeling for their book Evaluation Health Promotion published by Mckennan and Petty. This funding provided the Trust with its initial funding and the Trustees acknowledge the extraordinary generosity of these three authors. The Trust relies on donations for its future funding.

The Trust has gift tax deductibility status and donations are very welcome. Receipts for tax deductibility are issued for every donation.

Current Projects

The Trust has limited its current projects to:

  • The Sidney Sax Public Health Medal;
  • Donation of the Australian & New Zealand Journal of Public Health to health and medical institutions, agencies and centres in poor countries.

It is the intention of the Trustees to expand the number and types of projects as donations to the Trust increase.
